The Old Mahoning "Pioneer" Cemetery is believed to be the oldest cemetery in the Connecticut Western Reserve. Established in 1804 on land donated by Henry Lane Jr. to be used as a dedicated burial ground; Pioneer Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the pioneers of Trumbull County, including many veterans. The last burial happened in 1897. Since the final burial, the Cemetery has been deteriorating. Many headstones are broken, missing or illegible.
The Trumbull County Genealogical Society saw the state of the Cemetery and decided to preserve as much information as we could before it disappeared forever. In 2003, we conducted an extensive survey of the Cemetery taking pictures of every headstone, recording all the information on each headstone and then compiling biographical information for each person buried there. We produced two survey books: Old "Mahoning" Pioneer Cemetery and Veterans Buried in the Pioneer (Old Mahoning) Cemetery.
